A little bit about me
I used to say that I’m thirty-something but that situation has recently changed so let’s just leave it at I’m pretty old I’ve seen some things in my time. I live in Flitwick, Bedfordshire with my girlfriend and a spoiled cat.
I’ve done a fair few things in my working life so far, but none have left me as fulfilled as running this company and making exceptional websites for clients who love the websites that we build for them which then represent their companies online. It’s very easy to feel happy and satisfied when doing something you really enjoy.
When I was 19, I worked for a practice of Accountants as a Trainee Accountant for about three years. To be perfectly honest, I was probably a bit too immature at the time to realise what a good job it actually was but, one lives and learns. Years later, I find that everything I learned there gave me an excellent grounding in understanding business generally, and that the knowledge I picked up during that time about how companies operate, allows me to provide business insight where other Web Designers just provide websites.
So how did I end up as a Web Designer? In 2003, I was lucky enough to land a great job at Machins Solicitors in Luton as a lowly IT Assistant. On about the second day, my then Manager, Alison, said these immortal words to me – “Sometimes, we’re really busy, sometimes, we’re not quite so busy. It’s a good idea to have a project to get on with so that you always look busy”.
So I had a think and felt that building websites might be an interesting thing to learn…
As soon as I started putting websites together, I really enjoyed it. It’s the right balance of languages and maths that keeps my enquiring mind interested and I always enjoyed the fact that I could make nice-looking websites without design – what I saw myself doing at the time was making attractive websites only by the application of languages and maths.
All the way through my seven-year career as an IT Manager, I would use my skills to make web applications to help the companies I worked for – these web applications were websites to do particular jobs, rather than ones which are for marketing. I had never actually made a public website before I started Webster Internet but I’d made a lot of quite complex websites which filled holes in different companies’ IT infrastructure. Then when I started the business, I found that my ability in the languages and maths side was fine but I really needed to ‘up my design game’, as I was spending lots of time designing websites and less time on the coding side.
Over the last six years or so, I’ve found that my interests have changed and that I enjoy the design side of my work as much, if not more than the coding side. I find that I’m inspired by all sorts of funny and varied things… now that I have studied design a bit, I look at how things around me are designed and why things look good or bad by mapping back what I’m seeing to design principles. I also find that I am really interested in fonts and typography, particularly how different fonts and typefaces work within design.
Webster Internet as an organisation is quickly approaching 250 live websites which I personally feel is a huge milestone – particularly if I look back to where Webster Internet was three or four years ago. Starting the business was extremely hard and something that I found to be totally outside of my skill-set at the time so it’s really gratifying to see the company doing so well.
