Your Website Looks Too Small On Desktop And Too Big On Mobile

Not wanting to take this article into a technical area, but we’re going to have to discuss pixels (bear with me please)… I’m typing this article on my shiny new iMac, it has a 27 inch screen with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels. Your website probably has a main width of below 1000 pixels in width, which means that on modern computers, it looks absolutely silly – it’s like reading your website through an upturned letterbox.

Then, you look at your website on your phone and you’re always having to zoom in and pinch and squeeze the screen to be able to read the text. Surely there’s a better way than this? Of course there is, it’s called responsive design and it’s ace – read about it here. Seriously, you need this stuff in your life – or your website at least.

Your Website Can’t Be Found

This is a really common issue with older websites. Have you noticed how much Google has evolved as a company since your website? Well their search algorithms have changed in that time too – functionally, Google’s search engine is barely recognisable from a couple of years ago.

Your website used to rank pretty well a couple of years ago, so why doesn’t it now? Since 2014, there have been 22 updates to the search algorithm, so it’s little wonder why your website has fallen in the rankings, particularly if you haven’t updated the website (see reason two above).

Google loves a decent amount of good quality and well organised content. Put a blog on your website and write some stuff for your customers, generate interest, share things on social media, create a buzz about your industry and your company and Google will find you!

Your Website Takes Ages To Load

This is the ultimate sin. Ever sat there for a minute and waited for a website to load? Of course you haven’t, you’ve found another four websites in that time. They say that the average internet user will allow maybe a couple of seconds for a website to load before clicking the back button and that time is getting shorter day-by-day.

Funnily enough, Google also cares about website loading times. In fact, they care so much about this that they’ve created a totally free tool that tells you how your website performs. This tool is called PageSpeed Insights and it’s marvellous – Google ‘Pagespeed’, click the link and enter your website in the box. You may be disquieted by the result.
