SSL Certificates – What are they and why do you need one?
SSL (or Secure Sockets Layer) Certificates are often mentioned in the web design world, but many of those outside of it don’t know why they’re important as they are, or how to know if you’ve even got one.
In 2021, every business with a website (which should be every business!) absolutely needs to have one. Let’s take a look at why and how you can find out if you’ve got one.
Contact UsHow Do I Know If I’ve Got An SSL Certificate?
The easiest way to tell if your website already has SSL is to look within the URL bar when accessing your site. There will be two different ways to check:
The first way to check your site for an SSL certificate is by clicking on your URL so that it is fully expanded. It will start with either http:// or https:// – you’re looking out for the latter as this means that your website is already secured with an SSL certificate.
The other way to check your site is to simply check the URL bar when you’re on your website. To the left of your website name, there should be a padlock symbol. If you have this, congrats, you already have SSL on your site! If there is no padlock then it’s likely that your website is still not secure and you should focus on getting an SSL certificate as soon as you can.
Simply by securing your site with an SSL certificate greatly reduces a number of risks and drawbacks for your business, allowing you to operate safely online. Not only will it allow you minimise breaches, but it will allow you to gain the trust of new customers by showing them that you’re a safe, secure environment to browse within.

Well, as we’ve discovered, an SSL certificate essentially makes your website more secure and safer for web users. In addition to that, it provides websites with a visible padlock as recognition of a website’s safety, allowing web users to quickly detect if a website is secure or not.
Nowadays, most web users are extremely cautious in what data they enter, which sites they access and how they keep themselves and their data safe online. That’s why and SSL certificate is so key – without it, users feel unsafe on your website, are far less likely to trust it, and in around 82% of cases, won’t even use your website in the first place!
That’s a huge chunk of online users that you’ll drive away if you aren’t secured properly, massively damaging your website’s effectiveness and potential.
In addition to this, you are also more at risk of hacks and data breaches, which could not only lose your business money, but also puts your customers’ private details and information at risk.
