Danny Van Kooten, the builder of the Mailchimp for WordPress plugin, had an idea one day that he was going to reduce the size of his plugin in order to reduce Carbon emissions. Smaller amounts of data needing to be loaded meant slightly less energy used by websites with the plugin installed. Van Kooten shrunk the plugin by a mere 20kb – that sounds like nothing at all right? Well, given that over 2 million websites use his plugin, that adds up to a huge amount. In fact, every month, trimming this code by 20kb saved around 59,000Kgs of carbon!
In principle then, reducing the amount of code in your website or a plugin that you’ve built, will help to reduce the global carbon output as less energy will be required to load internet pages, thus helping to protect the environment and remain a more sustainable planet!
