Starting on October the 19th, it is sustainability week. In order to remain as sustainable as we can, there are many things that people can do – one relatively new idea to remain sustainable is by building websites sustainably.
What exactly is sustainable web design?
Sustainable web design involves reducing the lines of code and the size of the pages that need to load, even by just a small amount is enough to help out. Danny Van Kooten, the builder of the Mailchimp for WordPress plugin, had an idea one day that he was going to reduce the size of his plugin in order to reduce Carbon emissions. Smaller amounts of data needing to be loaded meant slightly less energy used by websites with the plugin installed. Van Kooten shrunk the plugin by a mere 20kb – that sounds like nothing at all right? Well, given that over 2 million websites use his plugin, that adds up to a huge amount. In fact, every month, trimming this code by 20kb saved around 59,000Kgs of carbon!
In principle then, reducing the amount of code in your website or a plugin that you’ve built, will help to reduce the global carbon output as less energy will be required to load internet pages, thus helping to protect the environment and remain a more sustainable planet!
Why will sustainable web design become extremely important in the future?
As we know, reducing our carbon footprint is crucial in maintaining a habitable and safe environment for everybody to live in. This is only going to become more important in the future as the climate deteriorates, meaning that we will need to consider more and more things we are doing in order to reduce their impacts on carbon emissions. That’s where sustainable web design can really make a big difference.
Van Kooten’s contribution alone saves over 59,000Kgs each and every month – the equivalent of flying from Amsterdam to New York and back 85 times! Now think how much could be saved if every plugin builder did the same, and every web designer and builder reduced the size of the website by the same amount. With the sheer number of people online, browsing websites, that would add up to a huge amount of carbon savings! Just by making websites ever so slightly smaller. With such a huge potential to save carbon emissions and protect the planet, it will become ever more important for developers to pay attention to this.
