Your website is an important part of your marketing funnel as it’s likely where you’ll be driving the final sign-ups, leads, and sales. But as an SMB owner, it can be extremely hard to find the time for looking after it, updating it regularly, and optimising each section to match your goals.

We’ve created a short list or priorities that’ll help you to focus on a few key elements if you’re pinched on time, that will still allow your website to function well and should keep you on track with many of your goals!

website design priorities for busy business owners and marketers

Your Header & Menu Section

The first of your priorities should be the header of your website. It’s visible on most, if not all, of your pages and contains some of the most important elements like your business logo, tagline, and menu.

When optimising this section, you should focus on a couple of different things:

  • Making sure that your logo is high quality and easily visible. This is crucial in getting your customers to trust your website as it’s one of the first things they’ll notice – and you want them to recognise who you are!
  • Optimising your menu for ease of use and understanding. Your users are on your website for a reason, whether it’s to learn more about your business, gain value from your content, or purchase your products / services. Whatever it is, you need your customers to be able to find what they’re looking for quickly and easily, otherwise they may just leave.

Headlines

Another priority that can be a quick fix to help improve the performance of your content is optimising your headlines. Headlines are arguably the most important text on your website – in fact, whilst only 20% of users are likely to read your full text, around 80% will read your headlines and titles!

Hooking your users’ attention straight away is crucial in getting them to scroll further, engage with the rest of your content, and ultimately work their way through your website until they reach the decision stage.

Headlines are also important for your on-page SEO, so as well as making them interesting, you should try to include your important keywords too.

Buttons & Calls To Action

Essential in getting users to take the actions that you want, buttons with clear CTA’s are an easy choice to add to the priorities list. They’re quick and easy to add, and can be customised to create powerful clickable elements that drive important engagements for your business!

Button CTA’s are so powerful that adding multiple to each page has been shown to increase your conversion rate by 20%. Focus on creating a button design that’s cohesive with your branding, stands out on your page, and is appealing to the eye. Also don’t forget to add clear, meaningful text that tells your users exactly where that button will take them.

The Speed of Your Pages

Pages that load slowly are a no-go in 2022 – people just aren’t going to hang around. Almost 40% of users will leave if your page takes 5 seconds or more to load, and 70% of users say that site speed has an impact on their purchasing decision!

Whilst full page speed optimisation is a tricky task that often takes a long time, you can work on a few things quickly that will go a long way in at least keeping you under the 5 second mark. Make sure image file sizes are under 100kb, reduce the number of images on your page if there are lots that could be crowding the space, remove image or video backgrounds, and turn off pop-ups / ads.

Mobile Design

The final priority on the list, but by no means least important, is focusing on mobile design. Creating a fully responsive website that works flawlessly on every screen size takes time and fiddling around with various elements to ensure they behave properly on different devices.

If you’re short on time, make mobile your priority. Design your website so that it works without a hitch on mobile screen sizes, and don’t worry too much about tablet and desktop. Whilst these are obviously still important considerations, mobile users are the ones most likely to visit your website, so if you’re really struggling for time, these are the users to prioritise. Make sure images are the right size for mobile screens, check that all text is large enough to read, and ensure that your clickable elements are big enough for fingertips (at least 10mm).
