If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably stumbled across the term “domain authority” (DA) or “domain trust” (DT) before and you’d like to know a little bit more. Well, you’re in the right place! Today we’re going over what exactly DA refers to, what impact it has and does not have, and what it’s so important for.
Contact UsFirst of all, what is domain authority?
Domain Authority is a metric in SEO that measures and predicts how likely a website is to rank within the search engine results.
It was originally developed by Moz to give website owners a good idea of how “rankable” their website is. It’s measured on a scale of 0 – 100, with those sites having more rankability and overall strength being closer to the 100 end of the scale.
Many factors go into the domain authority score of a website, including things like number of backlinks, quality of backlinks, page content, and more.
Contact UsThe Impact of Domain Authority
Whilst domain authority is both useful and important for SEO efforts, Google have repeatedly stated that it is not a metric that they measure, record, or use in any of their ranking algorithms.
So…it doesn’t affect my Google SEO? Well in the eyes of Google, DA means nothing, but that doesn’t mean it has no impact on your SERP (Search Engine Results Page) rankings. Google still use the individual metrics behind “domain authority” in their ranking processes, such as number of backlinks to your page, the quality of the links to your page, the strength and relevance of the content on your page etc.
Therefore, if measured and used correctly, the domain authority score for your website will show you how well you’re likely to rank for certain terms, and whether or not you’re likely to beat a competitor.
Contact UsWhy Does Domain Authority Matter and Why Is It Still Important?
As we’ve established, domain authority is essentially a measurement metric created for SEOs and website owners to understand how well their website could do when ranking.
The first reason why domain authority matters is because it gives you a great idea of how likely you are to rank for more competitive search terms / keywords. If you’ve got a high domain authority score (generally 50 and above), you could probably say it’s worth targeting competitive, broader keyword phrases. However, if your DA is on the low side, it tells you that you’re likely wasting your time with frequently searched, broader keywords as you won’t be able to outrank other websites. Instead, you should focus on longer phrases, or more specific phrases that relate to your business’s location or exact service and page titles.
Another reason why domain authority matters is because it tells you where you are against your competition, in turn giving you a direct indication as to whether you can beat them in the SERPs or not. If you can see that a website is ranking number one for “London cleaning services”, you can find out their DA score here and compare it to your own. If theirs is lower than yours, it tells you that by optimising your on-page SEO, you stand a good chance of beating them to the top! This again gives you a good idea of what rank you’ll be able to achieve, and which terms are worthwhile for your business.
Finally, domain authority can help you to establish where your website might be lacking (or excelling). A low domain authority score highlights a lack of good quality backlinks coming from other websites, giving you something to work on to drive your SEO in the future.
Contact UsWhilst domain authority is just a measurement metric created to help understand your website’s rankability, it is still incredibly useful when used properly. Hopefully you understand a little more about what the term is referring to now, and how it can help your business to focus on the most effective keywords and SEO optimisations!
